When evolutionary biologists attempt to make sense of altruism ...
If you start with the assumptions that
a) we are all always-already selfish
b) life is really always-already about the production and management of resources
Then you can end up with ideas such as the following:

I'm glad I don't work with those assumptions.

But, but, Anthony, that article is so cool!
Or was I brainwashed during my biology studies? I don't know, but to me this kind of thing helps me question my own motives and impulses, and recognize that some of them may be hard-wired for millenia-old purposes that really have very little to do with my personal needs, happiness, or ideals. With that awareness, I am more free to make truly altruistic choices. Nothing wrong with that, I'd say.
